Begin by Looking at the End

Where are You Going?

Amidst the busy and constant movement of life, it is easy to plow along with our heads down and just get things done. But inevitably, you will get to a point (or not) and wonder, “Am I heading in the right direction?” or, “am I pursuing the right goals?” We can often lose sight of what is truly important and valuable when we are so focused on checking off tasks.

To gain the insight we need to steer in the right direction, we must begin by looking at the end. And I mean the WAY end. What do you want people to say about you in your eulogy? How do you want people to remember you? What kind of life and legacy do you want to leave behind? Who do you want to have become when all is said and done? It might seem morbid, but it’s reality. And as with any good goal, you have to define what that goal looks like.

So, here are 4 steps to begin by looking at the end:

  1. Identify Your Life Accounts – What are the aspects of your life that are most important to you? What relationships are most valuable? Write/list them so you have visibility (e.g. God, spouse, children, health, emotional wellbeing, work, financial wellbeing, intellect, family, friends, church, community, etc.)
  2. Assess The Status – It’s difficult to make progress if you don’t know where you’re currently at. Take time to evaluate how you are doing in each of your life accounts so you can have clarity, humility, honesty, and even motivation to begin designing where you’d like to be.
  3. Dream – Write out some big and exciting ideas for each of your life accounts. Don’t dwell on limitations or barriers. Just dream. Imagine what it’d be like to live those dreams.
  4. Create A Plan – Start charting a course to attaining this life you want in the end. Start setting habits and commitments that will get you there. Create goals that will focus your attention each day on where you want to be when you get to the end.
