The Focused Life Checklist

Where are you right now? Not geographically. I mean you. Your relationships. Your wellbeing. You.

If you were placed on the spot to answer this question, would you know your answer? Would you be confident? Would you have a general idea? Or no clue?

These are questions that, for many, are difficult (or even sometimes painful) to ponder. Life gets busy and, when it does, it’s hard to stop.

Sometimes we just don’t even know where to start. In one sense, we’re fine. Yet at the same time we feel maybe we’re not. Maybe it’s a specific area of life. Or just a general feeling that we aren’t where we’d like to be. So what are you to do?

You need to assess your life

In order to make progress in anything, you need to know where you’ve been, where you are, and where you’re going. Only then will you have the information you need to adjust your path or stay the course.

To help you assess yourself, I’ve provided a checklist of the 9 domains of life.

SELF

☐ 3) Spirit

RELATIONSHIPS

☐ 5) Family

☐ 6) Community

VOCATION

☐ 7) Work

☐ 8) Money

☐ 9) Avocation

You’ll notice that these 9 domains are housed in 3 concentric circles of influence and control (self, relationships, vocation).

For each of these circles, we have differing levels of control and influence that will change with our circumstances and stages of life. And each category may also shift in its importance and urgency throughout life.

It’s up to you to decide which areas get the appropriate amount of attention.

To assess how you’re doing, begin by ranking each category of your life on a scale of 1-10. After you’ve listed this out, you’ll have a more clear understanding of where you think you are.

Try to be as honest as possible. Don’t pad your stats but also don’t be too harsh. You might consider asking a loved one, or someone who knows you well, how they feel you are doing in a particular domain(s).

In future posts, I will go into more depth with each area of life. How to assess where you’re at. To reflect on where you want to be. And to make the changes necessary to be who you want to be.
